AI is reshaping India’s workforce, empowering millions

AI is revolutionizing workplaces by offering new opportunities—provided people acquire the necessary skills to harness it. To address this need, Microsoft’s ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA initiative aims to train 10 million Indians in AI proficiency over five years, partnering with governments, NGOs, and educational bodies.

Building on a previous program that upskilled 2.4 million Indians, the initiative focuses on bridging the digital divide and fostering inclusivity. “Our goal is to enhance employability and create an equitable future for all Indians,” said Puneet Chandok, president of Microsoft India and South Asia.

Civil servants like Raghavendra Pratap Singh, Review Officer in Uttar Pradesh, illustrate AI’s transformative power. Singh attended a one-day digital skills course where he mastered tools like Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT. AI now helps him draft official letters, summarize complex policy documents, and translate legal orders—cutting drafting time from an hour to 45 minutes while improving accuracy.

The training program, conducted by Microsoft in collaboration with UPDESCO and AISECT, focuses on practical AI applications tailored to government needs, such as document creation and analysis. Trainer Ateet Dixit shared, “Many officers are new to AI. When they see its utility, they’re amazed by how much time it saves.”

Singh has even extended AI’s utility to personal tasks, using tools to craft heartfelt wedding wishes. As AI integration spreads, initiatives like this ensure that workers remain empowered and ready for the future.
