New Delhi: Amazon has refreshed its Kindle e-reader lineup with redesigned displays, slimmer builds, improved performance and longer battery life, while introducing new accessories aimed at making page turning more convenient.
The updated range includes new Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft models, along with new Kids editions. Amazon has also introduced the Kindle Click, a Bluetooth page-turning remote, and a new cover with physical page-turn buttons for select premium models.
The new Kindle generation brings a flatter front design across the lineup, eliminating the raised edge around the display. Amazon has also moved the power button to the top-right corner of the devices, a change intended to make one-handed use more natural.
New Kindle gets faster display and 16GB storage
The entry-level Kindle now features a 6-inch, 300ppi glare-free E Ink display with a flush-front design.
Amazon says the new model can display books around 30% faster than its predecessor. It comes with 16GB of storage and offers up to six weeks of battery life on a single charge. The device is also thinner and lighter than the previous generation.
The standard model starts at $149.99, while a premium version with an aluminium rear panel, 32GB storage and a matte finish starts at $189.99 in the US. India pricing and availability have not yet been announced, according to the India Today report.
The new Kindle is available in colours including Ube and Graphite, while the aluminium version comes in Alpine Sky Aluminium and Seaglass Green Aluminium.
Kindle Paperwhite gets display upgrades
The refreshed Kindle Paperwhite has been redesigned to be thinner and lighter while retaining its waterproof construction.
It features an oxide thin-film transistor backplane, which Amazon says enables improvements in display performance and contrast. The Paperwhite also retains an adjustable warm light for more comfortable reading in different lighting conditions.
Battery life is rated at up to 12 weeks, making the Paperwhite the longest-lasting model in the new lineup.
The standard 16GB Paperwhite starts at $199.99, while the 32GB Signature Edition starts at $249.99 in the US.
The Signature Edition adds an aluminium rear housing, an automatically adjusting front light, wireless charging and support for double-tap page turning.
Kindle Colorsoft brings updated colour display
Amazon has also refreshed the Kindle Colorsoft, its colour e-reader designed for books, comics, graphic novels and other content where colour can add context.
The new Colorsoft uses a redesigned display system incorporating a light guide with nitride LEDs and an oxide backplane. Amazon says the technology is intended to improve colour and brightness while retaining the paper-like appearance associated with Kindle displays.
The Colorsoft has a 7-inch colour display and supports colour highlights. Battery life is rated at up to eight weeks.
The 16GB model starts at $289.99, while the 32GB Signature Edition is priced from $319.99 in the US.
Kindle Click lets readers turn pages remotely
One of the most notable additions is the new Kindle Click, a small Bluetooth remote designed specifically for turning pages.
Priced at $34.99 in the US, the device allows readers to move forward or backward through a book without touching the Kindle itself. It works with the newly launched Kindle devices and Kindle models released from 2024 onwards, according to Amazon.
The accessory could be particularly useful for readers who prefer to hold an e-reader with both hands, use it while lying down or keep the device positioned at a distance.
Amazon’s official Japan announcement also confirms the Kindle Click as a Bluetooth page-turning remote. In Japan, it is priced at ¥5,180, with shipments scheduled for mid-November.
New cover brings back physical page-turn buttons
Amazon has also introduced a Page-Turn Cover with physical buttons for the new Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition and Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition.
The buttons are built directly into the cover, allowing users to turn pages while holding the Kindle rather than tapping the touchscreen. Amazon says the cover is designed to provide a physical click when the buttons are pressed.
In Japan, the accessory is priced at ¥11,980, with shipments scheduled for mid-November.
The move is notable because modern Kindle models have generally relied on touch controls for page navigation. Amazon’s new accessory gives users a physical-control option without requiring buttons to be built into the e-reader itself.
Kids Kindle models also updated
Amazon has also refreshed its Kindle Kids range.
The new Amazon Kids Kindle comes with a 6-inch black-and-white display, 16GB storage and up to six weeks of battery life. The device includes a child-friendly cover and a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+.
A new Amazon Kids Kindle Colorsoft is also being introduced with a 7-inch colour display. It is aimed at younger readers who use illustrated books, educational comics and other colour-rich content.
The Kids models are designed to limit distractions by excluding games, videos, apps and social-media notifications. Parents can use the Parent Dashboard to monitor reading time and progress. Amazon says the included Kids+ subscription provides access to more than 2,000 children’s books and educational comics.
India availability remains unclear
Despite the global refresh, Indian consumers may have to wait for confirmation about local availability.
The India Today report noted that Amazon had not announced India launch dates or pricing for the new Kindle devices at the time of publication.
Amazon has, however, already announced availability in Japan. The new Kindle 16GB, Kindle 32GB and Amazon Kids Kindle are available for purchase there, while the new Paperwhite and Colorsoft models entered pre-order, with shipments scheduled from November 11.
The company is therefore expanding the refreshed Kindle range across international markets, but details for India remain awaited.
A broader Kindle redesign
The latest update is more than a routine specification refresh. Amazon has redesigned the physical appearance of its Kindle family, introduced new display technologies, increased storage on some models and added accessories that provide alternative ways to navigate through books.
The move also brings physical page-turning controls back into the Kindle experience through optional accessories rather than by adding buttons directly to the e-readers.
For readers, the combination of flatter designs, faster page rendering, longer battery life and new control options represents Amazon’s latest effort to make its dedicated e-readers more convenient while maintaining the distraction-free reading experience associated with Kindle.
