California: Apple has signalled that iPhone prices could increase in the coming months after recently raising the prices of MacBooks and iPads. The company has also indicated that other products, including AirPods and Apple Watches, may see price revisions as rising component costs continue to impact the consumer electronics industry.
The latest comments from the Cupertino-based technology giant come after it increased the prices of select MacBook and iPad models on June 25. Apple attributed the move to a sharp rise in the cost of memory and storage components, driven largely by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres worldwide.
While the company has not officially announced when iPhone prices will increase or which models will be affected, industry analysts believe a price hike is becoming increasingly likely.
Apple says higher component costs are driving price increases
In a statement reported by multiple international media outlets, including Bloomberg and CNBC, Apple acknowledged that it has reached a stage where price increases have become necessary.
The company said it has “reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products,” referring to the recent increases for iPads and MacBooks.
Apple explained that the consumer electronics industry is currently facing an unprecedented surge in the prices of memory and storage components.
According to the company, the rapid growth of AI infrastructure and data centres has significantly increased demand for these essential components, leading to steep cost increases across the supply chain.
Apple added that it understands customers may not welcome the price hikes but said it is working to find long-term solutions.
AI boom pushing up hardware costs
The global artificial intelligence boom has led technology companies to invest billions of dollars in new AI data centres, creating unprecedented demand for advanced memory chips and storage devices.
Industry analysts say this surge has resulted in higher manufacturing costs for smartphones, laptops and other electronic devices.
According to Counterpoint Research, prices of memory and storage components have risen sharply over recent quarters, placing pressure on manufacturers to either absorb the additional costs or pass them on to consumers.
The rising cost of semiconductor components is affecting not only Apple but also several global consumer electronics companies.
iPhone price hike appears increasingly likely
Although Apple has not officially confirmed a price increase for iPhones, market analysts believe it is only a matter of time before the company revises pricing.
Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, said the increased cost of components could add approximately 200 US dollars to Apple’s manufacturing cost for each iPhone.
Such a significant rise in production costs may eventually force the company to increase retail prices to protect its profit margins.
However, Apple has not clarified whether any future price increase would apply only to the upcoming iPhone 18 series or whether existing models, including the iPhone 17 lineup, could also become more expensive.
Other Apple products may also become costlier
Apart from iPhones, reports suggest Apple could extend price increases to other product categories.
AirPods and Apple Watches are among the products that may witness higher prices if component costs continue to rise.
The company has not provided a timeline for any additional price revisions, but its recent statement indicates that the latest MacBook and iPad price hikes may be the beginning of broader pricing adjustments across its product portfolio.
Consumers planning to purchase Apple devices may therefore keep a close watch on future announcements.
What this means for buyers
If Apple proceeds with further price increases, customers could end up paying significantly more for future devices.
Higher prices may particularly affect buyers planning to upgrade to the next generation of iPhones or purchase premium Apple products.
At the same time, the company continues to face the challenge of balancing rising production costs with consumer demand in an increasingly competitive global smartphone market.
For now, Apple has only confirmed recent price hikes for MacBooks and iPads, while any increase in iPhone, AirPods or Apple Watch prices remains subject to future announcements.
