Cupertino: Apple is reportedly developing and testing a screenless fitness band that could compete with products such as Whoop and other health-focused wearables. The device is still in the prototype stage, and Apple has not yet decided whether it will bring the product to market.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been exploring the screen-free fitness tracker category for several months and has already developed prototypes. The project is said to have the interest of senior Apple executives, including executive chairman Tim Cook and services chief Eddy Cue.

If Apple proceeds, the device is not expected to launch before 2028.

What will Apple’s screenless fitness band look like?

The reported prototypes feature a thin fabric band with a computing module that sits on the wrist. The module is equipped with sensors designed to monitor health and fitness data, but unlike the Apple Watch, the device would not have a display.

The screenless design would put the focus on continuous health and activity tracking rather than notifications, apps or other smartwatch functions.

The exact specifications have not been disclosed, and Apple has not confirmed the product’s development publicly. The project remains under consideration, meaning the design and feature set could change before any potential launch.

Apple takes aim at the screen-free wearable trend

The reported development comes as screenless fitness trackers have gained traction in the wearable market.

Whoop has built its product around continuous health and fitness monitoring without putting a screen on the wrist. Oura has taken a similar health-first approach with its smart rings. Google and other companies are also exploring simpler wearable formats.

Screen-free devices can offer a different experience from conventional smartwatches by reducing the emphasis on notifications and apps. Their simpler hardware can also allow manufacturers to focus on sensors and health tracking.

Apple appears to be evaluating whether a similar approach could complement, rather than simply replicate, the Apple Watch.

Health tracking could be at the centre

The reported Apple band would build on technologies that the company already uses in its smartwatch and health ecosystem.

Recent Apple Watch models have increasingly focused on health and fitness measurements, while Apple has also been developing new ways to present health information through its Health app.

According to reporting based on Gurman’s information, Eddy Cue is pushing Apple’s health teams towards simpler interfaces and products that place greater emphasis on health and fitness. The company is also testing a redesigned Health app in iOS 27.2 with a more user-friendly interface and clearer guidance.

The reported strategy could allow a screenless device to collect health data continuously while leaving the iPhone and Health app to provide the visual interface.

Apple is rethinking its wearable lineup

The screenless fitness band is reportedly part of a broader rethink of Apple’s wearable products.

Apple has been evaluating different directions for the future of the Apple Watch, including alternative screen designs and sizes. A round-display Apple Watch has also reportedly been considered, although there is no indication that such a model is certain to launch.

The company is also working on other wearable products, including smart glasses and AirPods with cameras, according to reports.

The wider strategy suggests Apple is looking beyond the traditional smartwatch format as it expands its health, fitness and AI ambitions across its wearable ecosystem.

No launch decision has been made yet

Despite the reported prototypes and executive interest, Apple’s screenless fitness band remains an unannounced product.

Gurman’s reporting indicates that Apple has not settled on whether the device will actually be released. If development continues and the company eventually approves the product, the earliest expected launch timeframe is reportedly 2028.

For now, the reported project represents another possible direction for Apple’s wearable strategy, with the company exploring a simpler alternative to the display-equipped Apple Watch while expanding its focus on health and fitness tracking.
