Cupertino: Apple unveiled a wide range of updates and innovations at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026, signalling a major push into artificial intelligence (AI) while introducing iOS 27 and enhancements across its ecosystem.

The annual keynote drew significant attention as the company sought to address growing competition in AI from global technology rivals. The event was also notable as it marked the final WWDC keynote led by CEO Tim Cook, who is set to be succeeded by John Ternus on September 1.

Siri gets major AI overhaul

One of the biggest announcements was the transformation of Siri into “Siri AI”. Apple revealed that the voice assistant has been rebuilt using a new AI architecture developed in collaboration with Google, based on the Gemini family of models.

Siri AI now comes with a dedicated app and deeper integration across Apple devices including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, CarPlay and Vision Pro. The assistant is designed to be more conversational and capable of understanding personal context.

Apple stated that Siri AI can interact across apps, interpret on-screen content and deliver context-aware responses, similar to visual search tools. Conversations can also be synchronised across devices through iCloud.

Users will be able to customise Siri’s voice, adjust speaking pace, change accents and even use it while typing. However, the feature will initially launch only in English and will not be available in the European Union and China due to regulatory constraints.

Apple Intelligence expands across apps

Apple also showcased upgrades to its Apple Intelligence system, which integrates AI across apps and services. New capabilities include managing Safari tabs, identifying and updating compromised passwords, and offering AI-powered reply suggestions in Messages.

The system can also suggest actions based on conversations, such as creating calendar events, tracking price changes on websites and pulling information from apps like Mail and Messages during calls.

In the Health app, Apple introduced menopause and perimenopause tracking features, expanding its Cycle Tracking capabilities.

Meanwhile, the Home app will use AI to provide more detailed camera alerts and combine footage from multiple cameras into a single clip.

Privacy and developer tools highlighted

Apple emphasised its focus on privacy, with Senior Vice President Craig Federighi stating that data processed through AI features would only be used to fulfil user requests and would not be stored or misused.

The company said Apple Intelligence uses a combination of on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, along with a system orchestrator that links apps, files and web data securely.

Developers will benefit from new APIs, improved tools for working with foundation models, image-generation features and a new Core AI framework supporting third-party AI models.

Image Playground and Photos get upgrades

Apple announced enhancements to its Image Playground app, which can now generate higher-quality images based on user prompts. The app also supports creating lock screens, iMessage backgrounds and contact posters.

The company clarified that user data and images would not be used to train its AI models.

In the Photos app, new AI-powered editing features such as Reframe, Expand and improved Clean Up tools were introduced. These allow users to adjust composition, extend images and remove unwanted objects more effectively.

iOS 27 brings speed and design improvements

Apple confirmed that iOS 27 will be available for all devices currently supporting iOS 26, including models as old as the iPhone 11.

The update promises performance improvements, with apps launching up to 30 per cent faster and photos appearing up to 70 per cent quicker. AirDrop transfers could also be up to 80 per cent faster.

A new design feature called “Liquid Glass” will give users more control over the visual appearance of the interface, allowing them to switch between transparent and tinted styles.

Additional features include smarter switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, a revamped search system, custom equaliser settings for AirPods and expanded support for iCloud Shared Albums, including contributions from Android and Windows users.

macOS Golden Gate and other updates

Apple also introduced macOS Golden Gate, featuring redesigned toolbars, updated icons, edge-to-edge sidebars and rounded window corners.

Siri AI will be integrated into Spotlight, enabling users to search, analyse files and perform tasks more efficiently. A new right-click Siri input option will also be added.

The company further announced stricter parental controls for child accounts, incorporating approval-based systems and safer default settings.

Conclusion

Apple’s WWDC 2026 keynote underscored its renewed focus on artificial intelligence, with Siri AI and Apple Intelligence forming the core of its strategy. By integrating AI deeply into its ecosystem while emphasising privacy, Apple aims to regain momentum in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

With iOS 27 and other platform updates, the company is also enhancing performance, usability and cross-device experiences, setting the stage for a more intelligent and connected future for its users.
