Beren Kayali, co-founder of Water Deploy, is making a significant impact with her foldable concrete water tanks. From her roots in a boarding school basement to receiving accolades in Imperial London, Kayali’s innovation has addressed global water needs, from Libya to Canada.
Her pivotal moment came during the devastating 2023 Türkiye earthquakes. A heartfelt video she made offering Water Deploy tanks went viral, leading to an outpouring of support and the deployment of 15 tanks to affected areas. Her personal connection to the crisis, being from Türkiye herself, drove her commitment to aid those in need.
As global leaders convene for World Water Week in Stockholm, Kayali emphasizes the growing issue of water scarcity exacerbated by climate change. Poor water quality is a significant risk for children under five in Europe and Central Asia, with climate change worsening the situation.
Kayali’s journey began at Imperial College London, where her community rallied to fund her education. Now, recognized with a purple plaque for her contributions to STEM, she advocates for increased investment in water infrastructure to prepare for and respond to crises.
Her appeal aligns with UNICEF’s call for robust WASH infrastructure investments. As a part of UNICEF’s Innovation30, Kayali continues to use her platform to champion innovative solutions and highlight the importance of water as a tool for peace and resilience.
