BITS Pilani, through its Work Integrated Learning Programmes (WILP), has inaugurated its Smart Manufacturing Competency Centre (SMCC) in Bengaluru.
The new centre is the second in a planned nationwide series of competency centres for 2026, following the earlier launch of an Automotive Competency Centre in Chennai.
Bengaluru chosen as strategic hub
BITS Pilani said Bengaluru was selected because of its strong position as India’s leading technology and industrial ecosystem.
The city hosts major sectors including aerospace, defence, electronics, automotive and advanced manufacturing, making it ideal for industry-focused innovation.
Focus on real-world engineering
The SMCC has been designed as an integrated platform combining experiential learning, applied research, faculty development and industry collaboration.
It will support working professionals, students and faculty in solving practical engineering challenges linked to modern manufacturing.
Key technology areas
The centre will focus on:
- Mechatronics and Industrial Automation
- Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
- AI and Machine Learning for Manufacturing
- Digital Twins and Virtual Commissioning
- Advanced Robotics
Officials said these technologies would be used to improve productivity, quality, energy efficiency and process optimisation.
Major boost for MSMEs
A key goal of the centre is to help MSMEs adopt advanced technologies without heavy investment burdens.
The facility will allow smaller companies to prototype solutions, test systems and collaborate with experts and students to create scalable industrial improvements.
Skill growth for future industry
Industry observers say such centres can play a major role in preparing India’s workforce for next-generation manufacturing and Industry 4.0 transformation#BITSPilani #Bengaluru #Manufacturing #Technology #Education #newskarnataka
