A noticeable shift may soon reshape India’s technology landscape, with coastal Karnataka’s Mangaluru increasingly being seen as a strong challenger to Bengaluru in the race for IT growth.
According to insights shared by chartered accountant Sarthak Ahuja, professionals in the technology sector are beginning to look beyond Bengaluru, with Mangaluru emerging as a preferred alternative.
IT workforce set for massive rise
Ahuja noted that Mangaluru currently has around 20,000 IT employees, with projections suggesting the number could touch nearly 2 lakh over the next eight years.
The city’s IT revenue has also shown strong momentum, rising from nearly ₹3,200 crore to close to ₹5,000 crore within two years.
Global firms entering coastal Karnataka
A major reason behind this growth is the arrival of Global Capability Centres (GCCs), where multinational firms establish research and development operations.
Companies such as Bose Corporation have already set up centres in the city, supported by Karnataka government incentives for innovation and R&D investment.
Lower costs, better lifestyle
Compared to larger metros, office rentals in Mangaluru are said to be around 30 percent lower than Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad.
Employee attrition is also reportedly much lower, making the city attractive for long-term workforce planning.
Residents benefit from easier commutes, less traffic congestion and comparatively affordable housing, with two-bedroom apartments ranging between ₹50 lakh and ₹1 crore.
Talent pipeline remains strong
The city has around 25 engineering colleges producing nearly 10,000 graduates annually, strengthening its growing talent ecosystem.
With policy support, lifestyle advantages and rising corporate interest, Mangaluru is now being described by many as India’s emerging “Silicon Beach”.
