Google has announced a major upgrade for Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, introducing a redesigned interface, smarter Gemini AI integration, immersive navigation and premium entertainment features.

The company said the updates are aimed at making driving more seamless, connected and personalised for users worldwide.

Android Auto gets a fresh new look

Google revealed that Android Auto will receive a complete visual refresh with customisable widgets, expressive fonts, wallpapers and smoother animations inspired by Material 3 Expressive design.

The updated system is designed to adapt to different car screen shapes and sizes, including ultrawide and circular displays.

A major highlight is the new Immersive Navigation system in Google Maps, which introduces vivid 3D visuals showing buildings, terrain, traffic lights, stop signs and lane guidance to help drivers navigate more confidently.

HD video and Dolby Atmos coming to cars

For the first time, Android Auto users will be able to watch full HD videos on apps like YouTube while parked or charging. The feature will roll out later this year in supported vehicles from brands including BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Tata and Volvo.

Google also confirmed support for immersive Dolby Atmos audio in compatible apps and vehicles.

Media apps such as Spotify and YouTube Music are also receiving updated interfaces for easier in-car use.

Gemini AI becomes more deeply integrated

Google said Gemini AI will play a much larger role inside vehicles. Features like Magic Cue will help users respond to messages intelligently by understanding context from texts, emails and calendars.

Drivers will also be able to place food orders through apps like DoorDash using voice commands while driving.

Cars with Google built-in will receive even deeper Gemini integration, including the ability to answer vehicle-specific questions such as dashboard warning indicators or whether luggage will fit inside the boot.

More brands adopting Google built-in

Google confirmed that cars with Google built-in are now available in over 100 vehicle models across 16 automotive brands globally.

Additional features, including Zoom meetings, improved Maps and live lane guidance using front-facing vehicle cameras, are expected to roll out later this year
