Matt Schumer, CEO of Hyperwrite, has issued a stark warning about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, saying the technology is already reshaping the world of work faster than many realise.
In an essay titled “Something Big Is Happening”, Schumer described how AI now performs much of his technical work “better than I would have done it myself”, often without the need for corrections. He said he can describe a desired outcome, step away for hours, and return to find near-perfect results generated by AI systems.
‘This is happening right now’
Schumer compared the current moment to the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, when life shifted dramatically within weeks. He argued that AI disruption will not unfold gradually over decades but will arrive as a sudden “rearranging”.
He noted that a small group of researchers at companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind are shaping the future of the technology.
Citing comments by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Schumer referenced predictions that AI could eliminate up to 50 per cent of entry-level white-collar jobs.
‘A general substitute for cognitive work’
He argued that AI is not replacing a single skill but functioning as a general substitute for cognitive labour — from legal drafting and journalism to financial analysis, software engineering and customer service.
Unlike previous waves of automation, he warned, AI leaves fewer alternative roles for displaced workers to retrain into, as it continues improving across multiple domains simultaneously.
Advice: adapt early
Despite the sobering outlook, Schumer urged people not to panic but to adapt early. He encouraged individuals to use AI tools seriously, overcome ego-driven resistance and strengthen financial resilience.
“The future is already here,” he wrote, adding that the next two to five years could be deeply disruptive for many industries.
