New Delhi: Meta Platforms has rolled out a new paid subscription tier for Instagram in India, called Instagram Plus, priced at Rs 299 per month. The optional plan introduces a range of advanced tools, enhanced insights, and customisation features aimed at users who want more control over their experience on the platform.
The move is part of Meta’s broader push to monetise its ecosystem — which includes Facebook and WhatsApp — through premium subscriptions, while continuing to offer the standard free version.
What is Instagram Plus?
Instagram Plus is designed as an upgrade rather than a replacement. It focuses on three key areas: deeper engagement tools, improved insights, and enhanced personalisation.
In simple terms, subscribers get access to features that are not available to regular users, particularly around Stories and profile customisation.
More control over Stories
A major portion of Instagram Plus features revolves around Stories — one of the platform’s most popular formats.
Subscribers will be able to:
- See how many users rewatched their Stories
- Create unlimited custom audience lists beyond the Close Friends option
- Preview Stories secretly without appearing in the viewer list
In addition, Stories can be extended from the usual 24-hour limit to 48 hours, giving users more visibility. A “spotlight” feature also allows one Story per week to be highlighted for better reach.
Users can even search within their Story viewer list to track specific viewers. Another notable option enables posting content directly to profiles or highlights without pushing it into followers’ feeds — offering more control over visibility.
Exclusive features for paying users
Beyond Stories, Instagram Plus includes several visual and cosmetic upgrades.
These include:
- Animated Super Heart reactions that add dynamic effects to interactions
- Custom app icons curated by Instagram and creators
- Special fonts for profile bios
- Ability to pin up to six posts on a profile
These additions are aimed at helping users personalise their profiles and stand out on the platform.
Why Meta is introducing subscriptions
The launch of Instagram Plus reflects Meta’s increasing focus on subscription-based revenue. Instead of relying solely on advertising, the company is exploring paid features that offer additional value to power users and creators.
Importantly, Meta has clarified that Instagram Plus is entirely optional. The free version of Instagram will continue to function as usual, ensuring accessibility for all users.
What it means for users in India
For Indian users, the Rs 299 monthly fee puts Instagram Plus in the mid-range of app subscriptions. The value proposition will largely depend on how actively users engage with Stories and whether they benefit from deeper insights and customisation tools.
Meta has also indicated that more features will be added to Instagram Plus in the coming months, suggesting that the subscription could evolve significantly over time.
Should you subscribe?
Instagram Plus appears to be targeted at content creators, influencers, and highly active users who want more granular control and analytics.
For casual users, the free version may still be sufficient. However, those looking for enhanced engagement tools and unique profile features may find the subscription worth exploring.
