Nagpur Hosts Conclave on ICT and Waste Management Solutions

Nagpur: A one-day conclave focusing on Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Solid Waste Management was organized by The Times of India, with support from bigV Telecom and ITI Ltd (a Government of India enterprise). Experts highlighted the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) directives and the critical role of technology in enhancing waste management efficiency.

The NGT identified delays in project implementation caused by prolonged tendering processes in urban local bodies (ULBs). Experts recommended that the Urban Development Department (UD) adopt standardized specifications and work with empanelled PSUs, a model successfully used in Maharashtra.

IIT Kharagpur professor Brajesh Dubey stressed the necessity of technology-driven strategies for waste management, specifically for challenging materials like Styrofoam. Nabam Rich, Head of Civil Engineering at NIT Arunachal Pradesh, underscored the importance of public awareness to boost ICT adoption without heavy government intervention.

Sunil Kumar, senior scientist at CSIR-NEERI, called for collaborative platforms where technocrats, environmentalists, and policymakers could devise practical solutions. Highlighting the need to nurture student-led innovations, he pointed to initiatives from IIM Nagpur.

IIT Indore’s Ashootosh S Mandpe advocated for citizen grievance redressal apps and regular follow-up inspections, while IIT Bombay’s Deval Singh emphasized personalizing waste management technology based on regional demographics.

Other experts, including Kapil Kumar (NIT Delhi) and Ved Prakash Ranjan (IIT Jammu), highlighted the need for robust segregation, incentive-based policies, and research-driven policy amendments to address emerging issues like microplastics.

bigV Telecom showcased ICT applications, including QR code systems for monitoring waste collection efficiency across 40 lakh properties.
