Bengaluru, a hub of aviation, will soon have its first private airfield dedicated to training aeronautical engineering students. Aeroquest Innovations is developing the airfield on a 5.5-acre plot off Kanakapura Road, approximately 50 km from the city. The facility will initially collaborate with Reva University to provide its aeronautical engineering students hands-on flying experience, complementing their theoretical knowledge and lab work.
This airfield, designed specifically for radio-controlled aircraft, addresses the lack of dedicated infrastructure in Bengaluru for flying student-built planes. Aeroquest Director Abhay Pawar, whose son is an aeronautical engineering student, explained, “The education system is overly theoretical. Without practical exposure, engineering skills cannot be nurtured.”
Currently, students face challenges like uneven surfaces, trees, and interference from local populations while testing their projects. The new airfield will offer a smooth, obstruction-free environment, enabling students to fly and land aircraft safely. The land selection followed guidelines from the DGCA’s green zone specifications, ensuring the absence of buildings, poles, or trees in the flight path.
Narayan Swamy, registrar at Reva University, emphasized the collaboration’s importance: “Our students excel at building machines but lack exposure to flying. This initiative bridges that gap, enhancing their technical understanding and joy of learning.”
This venture aims to strengthen practical skills in aeronautics, boosting the aviation sector and inspiring similar projects across India.
