Seoul: Samsung Electronics has begun mass production of its most advanced enterprise solid-state drive (SSD), marking a significant step in strengthening its position in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure market.

The new PM1763 enterprise SSD is designed for use in Nvidia’s upcoming Vera Rubin AI platform and was first unveiled at Nvidia’s GTC conference earlier this year.

Built for next-generation AI data centres

The PM1763 SSD is powered by Samsung’s latest V-NAND flash memory technology and a newly developed 4-nanometre controller. According to the company, the new drive delivers read and write speeds that are more than twice as fast as its predecessor.

Samsung said the SSD is engineered to reduce data latency in AI processors and accelerators, enabling faster data access during AI training and inference workloads. To maintain peak performance under heavy workloads, the drive also incorporates a liquid-cooling system.

The company showcased the PM1763 alongside its next-generation HBM4 (High Bandwidth Memory) and SOCAMM2 low-power memory module, highlighting its broader strategy to provide a complete memory solution for AI data centres.

Growing competition in AI hardware

The announcement comes as semiconductor companies race to capitalise on surging demand for AI infrastructure. Samsung shares remained largely unchanged following the announcement, while rivals SK Hynix and Kioxia Holdings gained more than 4 per cent as investors continued to identify companies benefiting from AI-driven growth.

The semiconductor sector has witnessed increased volatility in recent months as investors rotate capital towards companies expected to play a key role in powering next-generation AI technologies.

Samsung leads enterprise SSD market

According to market research firm TrendForce, Samsung held the largest share of the global enterprise SSD market during the first quarter with 35 per cent, maintaining its leadership position.

It was followed by SK Hynix, Micron Technology, Kioxia Holdings and Kioxia’s partner Sandisk.

With AI computing demand continuing to rise, Samsung’s latest storage solutions are expected to play an important role in supporting next-generation data centres and advanced AI applications.
