New Delhi: Spotify is expanding beyond music and podcasts by introducing narrated long-form magazine articles on its platform, allowing users to listen to written stories instead of reading them.
The new feature turns traditional magazine content into audio experiences, making it easier for users to consume stories while commuting, cooking or doing daily tasks.
What the new feature offers
Spotify subscribers can now access over 650 narrated articles in English, covering a wide range of topics from culture and politics to entertainment and technology.
These stories come from well-known publications such as:
- Rolling Stone
- The Atlantic
- Vogue
- Variety
- Billboard
- Wired
- Vanity Fair
Each narrated piece is under two hours long and is produced by Spotify’s in-house audiobooks team. The company says these articles are designed to fit naturally alongside podcasts and audiobooks on the platform.
Human voices + AI narration
Spotify is using a mix of:
- Human narrators
- AI-generated voices
For transparency, the platform says any article narrated using digital voices will be clearly labelled, allowing listeners to know what they are hearing.
This reflects Spotify’s broader push into AI-powered audio content.
Who can access it?
- Premium subscribers:
Narrated articles are included within Spotify’s existing 15 hours per month audiobook listening limit - Free users:
Can purchase individual narrated articles for about $1.99 (around ₹190)
Pricing for India has not yet been officially confirmed.
Why Spotify is doing this
Spotify says the goal is to make audio content more approachable.
Shorter narrated articles can act as:
- An entry point for users new to audiobooks
- A lighter alternative to long podcasts or books
- A way to multitask while consuming content
“Articles will allow people to trial shorter, less intimidating listens,” the company noted.
Part of a bigger AI audio push
This move is part of Spotify’s wider strategy to expand in audio beyond music streaming.
Recently, the platform has been rolling out:
- AI-generated podcasts
- AI audiobook creation tools for authors
- AI-powered remixes and covers
- New formats like fitness content
By adding narrated journalism, Spotify is also helping publishers reach audiences who prefer listening over reading.
The bigger picture
The launch signals a shift in how content is consumed.
For users, it means:
- Turning reading time into listening time
- Accessing quality journalism on the go
For publishers, it opens up:
- A new distribution channel
- Access to Spotify’s recommendation and discovery algorithms
As audio continues to grow, features like narrated articles could blur the lines between podcasts, audiobooks and journalism, all within a single app.
