US to Ease Restrictions, Boost India-US Nuclear Ties and Technology Cooperation

As the Biden administration nears the end of its tenure, the US announced it would take necessary steps to lift long-standing regulations hindering civil nuclear cooperation between Indian nuclear entities and American companies. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, during his visit to India on January 5-6, emphasized that this move is crucial for realizing the full potential of the 2008 India-US civil nuclear deal. Sullivan met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sullivan also highlighted the growing partnership between India and the US in defense and technology, viewing it as essential for stability in the Indo-Pacific. Additionally, he discussed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, which he believes offers a superior model for growth and integration compared to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

However, he stressed that to unlock the full potential of their relationship, both nations must embrace core values like rule of law, pluralism, and the protection of freedoms, which are vital for fostering innovation. Regarding nuclear cooperation, Sullivan mentioned that paperwork for delisting Indian nuclear entities would be completed soon.

Sullivan also warned against the diversion of dual-use technologies to hostile nations and called for strengthened collaboration on export controls, industrial security, and securing supply chains. Despite setbacks, he remains optimistic about the future of the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor and its potential to rival China’s infrastructure initiatives.
