However, its creator says the robot—called Threehalves—has a far more practical purpose: helping humans perform some of the world’s most dangerous outdoor jobs. Developed by California-based robotics startup Satyress, the prototype is designed for hazardous tasks such as wildfire response, forestry work and disaster recovery.
Images of the unusual robot have attracted millions of views online, with many users questioning why it was designed with horns and a chainsaw. The company, however, says every aspect of the machine has been engineered with safety and functionality in mind rather than appearance.
Built for dangerous jobs, not combat
According to Satyress, Threehalves is intended to protect workers by carrying out dangerous tasks in environments where human lives are at risk.
The robot is being developed for forestry operations, vegetation management, clearing trees near power lines, wildfire response, mudslides and search-and-rescue missions in unstable terrain. These jobs often expose workers to falling trees, collapsing structures and other life-threatening hazards.
Why the robot has horns
The robot’s horn-like structures are not decorative.
Satyress says the horns house cameras that help operators monitor the position of the robot’s arms and tools while it is working. The cameras provide an additional layer of visual feedback, particularly if onboard sensors encounter problems during operation.
Controlled by humans, not autonomous AI
Despite its intimidating appearance, Threehalves is not an autonomous AI robot.
Instead, it is designed to be remotely operated by a trained human using joysticks, cameras and sensors, similar to controlling an industrial drone. The company says keeping humans in control is a deliberate safety decision, ensuring experienced operators make every critical judgement while remaining safely away from hazardous environments.
Centaur design improves stability
Unlike humanoid robots that walk on two legs, Threehalves uses a quadruped “centaur” chassis.
Its four-legged base provides greater stability on rough terrain, while the humanoid upper body allows it to use tools such as chainsaws, drills and impact wrenches. The robot stands about 7 feet (around 2.1 metres) tall and has been designed to fit sideways into the bed of a standard pickup truck for transport to remote locations.
Safety features built into the machine
Satyress says safety has been prioritised throughout the robot’s design.
Threehalves includes emergency braking systems, fail-safe mechanisms and pneumatic locks that can instantly immobilise the machine if required. The company has even explained how emergency responders could physically disable the robot should electronic systems fail, underscoring its focus on maintaining human oversight.
Inspired by California wildfires
Founder Beau G. said the idea for the robot emerged after severe storms damaged trees near his property close to California’s Tahoe National Forest.
Watching tree-clearing crews work in extremely dangerous conditions inspired him to build a machine capable of performing those tasks while keeping people out of harm’s way. The prototype has already cost more than $150,000 in parts and equipment, though it remains under development.
Still years away from commercial launch
Although the robot has generated significant attention online, it is still only a prototype.
The company says no launch date or commercial price has been announced, and a production-ready version remains at least a couple of years away. Current work is focused on testing individual components before integrating them into a fully operational system.
