New Delhi: WhatsApp has announced a major upgrade to its Events feature, allowing users to invite people who do not have a WhatsApp account and collect their responses without requiring them to download the messaging application. The update also introduces a dedicated Events Home section to help users organise invitations, track attendance and manage upcoming gatherings from one place.
The new features are aimed at making it easier to plan parties, family functions, meetings and other social gatherings. Until now, organising an event through WhatsApp was most convenient when everyone invited was already using the platform. People without an account often had to receive details through separate messages or other communication channels.
With the latest changes, WhatsApp is attempting to remove that limitation by introducing shareable event links that can also be opened by non-users. The company said the updated Events experience would roll out to users over the coming weeks.
Non-WhatsApp users can RSVP through shared links
The biggest addition is the ability to invite guests who do not have a WhatsApp account.
Users can create an event, add a customised cover photo and generate an invitation link. The link can then be shared with people through other communication channels, including text messages and email.
When a person without WhatsApp opens the link, they can view the event details through a web page. They can respond using three options: Going, Maybe or Not going.
To submit their response, guests need to enter their name and mobile number. They do not have to download WhatsApp, install the application or register for an account.
The event organiser can then view the responses along with those submitted by WhatsApp users. This allows the host to maintain a single attendance list even when invited guests use different messaging platforms.
The feature could be useful for weddings, birthday celebrations, office gatherings, community events and family functions where not every participant uses the same application. It also reduces the need for organisers to contact non-users separately to confirm their attendance.
WhatsApp’s move follows its earlier introduction of Guest Calls, which allowed people without an account to participate in certain calls through shared links. The expanded Events feature follows a similar approach of making selected WhatsApp experiences accessible beyond its registered user base.
New Events Home brings invitations together
WhatsApp is also introducing a dedicated section called Events Home to simplify event management.
The new hub will provide a centralised view of events created by users as well as invitations they have received. Instead of searching through multiple group conversations to find event details, users will be able to access their plans from one location.
To find the feature, users can open WhatsApp Settings and select Events. The section will display a consolidated list of past and upcoming events.
The Events Home is designed to help organisers manage invitations and responses more efficiently. It will also provide tools to create customised invitations, track RSVPs and coordinate arrangements with guests.
Another addition is the ability to set custom reminders. Organisers can use these reminders to inform attendees about an approaching event and help them remember important dates.
WhatsApp is also adding support for plus-one invitations. This allows organisers to give guests the option of bringing an additional person, making it easier to plan attendance for gatherings where participants may want to bring a partner, friend or family member.
The centralised hub could be particularly useful for people who regularly organise multiple events through different group chats. By bringing invitations and responses together, WhatsApp aims to reduce the effort involved in managing separate conversations.
WhatsApp highlights privacy protections
Inviting people outside a messaging platform raises questions about privacy, particularly when event links contain personal information and venue details.
WhatsApp says it has introduced specific safeguards for its updated invitation system.
The phone number of the event organiser will not be shown to guests they do not know. This is intended to prevent unfamiliar invitees from automatically obtaining the host’s contact information simply by opening an invitation.
The company has also restricted access to venue details for guests without WhatsApp accounts. Such guests will only be able to see the exact event address after submitting their RSVP.
This measure is intended to reduce the possibility of a forwarded invitation link exposing a private venue address to people who have not responded to the invitation.
WhatsApp has reiterated that personal messages and calls will continue to remain protected by end-to-end encryption. The company says the new event-sharing arrangements do not change the privacy protections applied to private communications.
However, organisers should still be careful when sharing invitation links, particularly for private gatherings. They should consider who receives the link and avoid distributing sensitive event information unnecessarily.
WhatsApp expands beyond group-chat planning
WhatsApp introduced its Events feature for Communities in May 2024. It subsequently expanded the functionality to regular group chats, allowing members to create events and indicate whether they would attend.
The latest update represents a further step in the company’s effort to make the feature more useful for organising gatherings beyond individual group conversations.
The introduction of external invitations also places WhatsApp in a more direct position to compete with dedicated event-planning services. Platforms such as Snapchat have introduced tools to help users organise plans and gatherings, while other services offer customised invitations and attendance management.
WhatsApp already has a large user base and is widely used for family, workplace and community communication. Allowing non-users to respond to invitations could make it more convenient for organisers who want to use the platform without limiting their guest list to registered members.
The new Events Home also gives the messaging service a more structured event-management experience instead of relying entirely on group-chat conversations.
When will the new features reach users?
WhatsApp has confirmed that the updated Events experience will roll out to everyone over the coming weeks. The company has not announced a single date by which the rollout will be completed.
As a result, users may not see the new Events Home or external RSVP option immediately. Availability could depend on the gradual rollout to different accounts and devices.
Once the update reaches an account, users can check the Settings section for the new Events option and explore the available event-management tools.
The ability to invite non-users without asking them to install an application is the most significant change. Combined with custom invitations, plus-one support, reminders and centralised RSVP tracking, the update could make WhatsApp a more convenient option for planning everyday gatherings.
The expansion reflects the company’s broader effort to make its services useful even when all participants are not registered on the platform. If the rollout is widely adopted, organising events through WhatsApp could become considerably easier for hosts and guests alike.
