New Delhi: WhatsApp has announced four new features for group chats, bringing permanent message pinning, the ability to share chat history after a member joins, group-specific Status updates and a filter for unread mentions and replies. The updates are designed to make busy group conversations easier to manage and help users find important information without scrolling through long message histories.

The Meta-owned messaging platform said the changes would help people catch up on conversations they may have missed and stay informed about messages that require their attention. The features address common challenges in active groups, where important announcements, plans and replies can quickly get buried under a stream of new messages.

Announced on October 29, the updates are being rolled out gradually. Their availability may therefore vary between users and devices.

1. WhatsApp allows messages to be pinned indefinitely

The first update gives users the option to keep important messages pinned in a group without selecting an expiry period.

Previously, WhatsApp required users to choose a duration when pinning a message. The available time limits included 24 hours, seven days and 30 days. With the new option, users can keep selected information pinned indefinitely.

The feature could be useful for groups that regularly share information members need to refer to. Family groups, school communities, apartment associations, workplace teams and event-planning groups could use it to keep important details accessible.

For example, a group could pin an event schedule, meeting location, group guidelines or a frequently needed announcement. Members would not have to search through older conversations to locate the information.

The change is intended to make pinned messages more useful for information that remains relevant beyond a few days or weeks.

2. Users can share chat history after someone joins

The second feature expands WhatsApp’s existing option for sharing recent message history with people who join a group.

Previously, users could choose whether to share recent messages when adding someone to a group. The new update makes it possible to share recent chat history even after the person has already joined.

To use the feature, a participant can tap the name of the recently added member in the group conversation and select the option to share recent messages.

This could help new members understand ongoing discussions without asking other participants to repeat information or forward individual messages.

For instance, someone joining a travel-planning group after arrangements have already started could receive recent messages about bookings, schedules and meeting points. Similarly, a new employee added to a project group could catch up on recent discussions.

WhatsApp says the shared messages remain protected by end-to-end encryption, like other personal conversations on the platform.

3. Group Status allows updates for selected groups

The third addition is Group Status, which allows users to share Status updates with members of a specific group rather than their wider audience.

WhatsApp Status normally allows users to share photos, videos and other updates with contacts according to their privacy settings. Group Status adds another way to limit an update to a particular circle of people.

For example, someone could share a running update with a fitness group without making it visible to family members, colleagues or other contacts. A school group could also use the feature to share updates relevant to its members.

People in the selected group can view and react to the update. They can also add their own Status updates within the group.

Like regular WhatsApp Status posts, Group Status updates disappear after 24 hours. This gives groups a way to share temporary information without adding every update to the main chat conversation.

The feature could be useful for communities and groups whose members want to share updates relevant to a specific audience.

4. New filter highlights mentions and replies

The fourth feature is a filter designed to help users identify unread group conversations in which they have been mentioned or received a direct reply.

WhatsApp groups can generate a large number of notifications, particularly when users participate in several active conversations. Important messages can be difficult to identify among general discussions.

The new Mentions and replies filter is intended to address this problem. It brings together unread group conversations where a user has been directly mentioned or received a reply. It also includes messages using the @all mention, which can notify everyone in a group.

Instead of opening every unread group individually, users can use the filter to identify conversations that may require their attention.

This could be particularly useful for people managing work groups, school communities, apartment associations and other active conversations. A user who has been away from WhatsApp for several hours could check the filtered conversations first to find messages specifically directed at them.

The feature is aimed at making it easier to prioritise relevant messages rather than treating every unread group conversation equally.

WhatsApp also highlights existing group tools

Alongside the four new updates, WhatsApp has highlighted several group features that users can already access.

These include private replies, which allow a user to respond directly to one person in a group without continuing the discussion in the main conversation.

The platform also offers poll settings that allow organisers to restrict participants to one answer. This can help groups reach a clear decision when voting on dates, plans or other options.

Member tags provide another way to identify participants and their roles within a group. For example, members can use labels such as parent, coach or treasurer to provide additional context.

These tools complement the latest updates by giving group members more ways to organise conversations and manage participation.

When will the new WhatsApp features be available?

WhatsApp is rolling out the four features gradually, so not every user may see them immediately. Availability can vary depending on the account and the version of the application.

Users can keep WhatsApp updated through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to receive the latest version. However, installing an update does not necessarily mean that every new feature will become available to an account immediately, as some changes are enabled progressively.

The four additions focus on different aspects of group communication: keeping essential messages accessible, helping new members catch up, sharing updates with selected groups and identifying conversations that need attention.

With more people using WhatsApp for family communication, workplace coordination, education and community activities, these changes aim to make group chats easier to follow. The gradual rollout will determine when users across Android and iOS can access the new features.
