New Delhi: Meta has introduced WhatsApp Plus, the messaging platform’s first subscription-based offering, giving users in India the option to pay for additional personalisation features while keeping the app’s core services free.
The subscription plan, priced at ₹79 per month, has reportedly begun rolling out for Android and iOS users in the country. The move follows Meta’s broader push towards offering paid subscription services across its major social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.
What does WhatsApp Plus offer?
WhatsApp Plus primarily focuses on customisation and does not alter the app’s core functionality.
Subscribers will gain access to 18 new colour themes, including options such as Vibrant Blue, Royal Purple, Forest Green and Fuchsia Pink. The plan also introduces 14 alternative app icons, allowing users to personalise the appearance of the messaging platform.
The subscription further includes 10 exclusive ringtones with names such as Flutter, Ripple, Meadow and Carnival, along with special sticker packs.
One of the practical additions is the ability to pin up to 20 chats at the top of the chat list, significantly higher than the standard limit available to regular users. Subscribers can also create and customise chat lists according to their preferences.
Core features remain free
Despite the new paid offering, Meta has clarified that all essential WhatsApp services will continue to remain free for users.
Features such as messaging, voice and video calls, status updates and end-to-end encryption will remain unchanged and accessible to everyone without a subscription.
The company appears to be positioning WhatsApp Plus as an optional premium experience for users seeking additional customisation rather than introducing any paywall for essential services.
How to subscribe
Users who wish to subscribe can do so through the WhatsApp application.
The process involves opening the app, navigating to Settings, selecting Subscriptions, and then choosing WhatsApp Plus. Payments are processed through the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store, depending on the device being used.
Once the payment is completed, users receive a confirmation notification and can access their premium features through the Subscriptions section in the app settings.
Meta has also introduced a one-month free trial for new subscribers before the ₹79 monthly fee comes into effect.
However, the company noted that the feature is being rolled out in phases, meaning some users may not immediately see the WhatsApp Plus option in their applications.
Is the subscription worth it?
The value of WhatsApp Plus largely depends on individual preferences.
For users who spend significant time on the platform and enjoy customising their digital experience, the subscription may offer additional convenience and aesthetic appeal.
However, for those satisfied with WhatsApp’s existing design and features, the new offering does not introduce any essential functionality that would affect the everyday messaging experience.
The launch of WhatsApp Plus marks Meta’s latest attempt to diversify revenue streams while continuing to keep the core messaging service free for billions of users worldwide.
