WhatsApp has started a global rollout of voice and video calling features on WhatsApp Web, enabling users to make and receive calls directly through their browser without installing the desktop application.

The update brings long-awaited calling functionality to the web platform, complementing its existing messaging and media-sharing tools.

What the new feature offers

WhatsApp Web users can now:

  • Make one-on-one voice and video calls via their browser
  • Use end-to-end encrypted calling, similar to mobile and desktop apps
  • Start calls directly from chat windows using call icons

The rollout is currently phased, meaning access is being gradually expanded. Future updates are expected to include group calling and web-based call links.

UAE restrictions remain in place

Despite the global launch, WhatsApp voice and video calls remain blocked in the UAE across mobile, desktop and web platforms.

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) enforces strict Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) regulations. Only licensed or approved providers are allowed to offer internet calling services. As WhatsApp’s VoIP services are not approved under current rules, telecom operators such as Etisalat and du block its calling functions.

However, messaging, media sharing and file transfers on WhatsApp Web continue to work normally in the UAE.

Legal alternatives in the UAE

Residents can use approved VoIP apps including:

  • BOTIM
  • GoChat and Voico
  • Zoom
  • Microsoft Teams

These platforms comply with UAE telecom regulations and are widely used for personal and professional communication.

As of early 2026, there has been no official announcement indicating a policy shift. While WhatsApp Web calling is expanding globally, UAE users will continue relying on approved VoIP services for internet-based voice and video calls.
