At least 35 peacocks have died over the past week in Tumakuru district, prompting concern among wildlife officials and local residents.

Forest authorities suspect extreme heat and dehydration as the likely causes, though a full investigation is underway.

Carcasses found in several villages

The dead birds were reportedly found across villages including Bommanahalli, Kolihalli, Byrasandra and Hullenahalli.

Officials said preliminary observations found the birds’ bodies largely intact, with feathers and organs undisturbed, though some lung abnormalities were reportedly noticed.

Heat stress under focus

With temperatures rising sharply across Karnataka, authorities believe severe heat and lack of water may have caused fatal stress among the birds.

Samples have also been collected from nearby water bodies, especially areas receiving wastewater from stone quarries, to check for contamination.

These samples have reportedly been sent to Bengaluru for forensic examination.

Bird flu not ruled out

While poisoning has reportedly been ruled out, forest officials said other possible causes such as avian infections, including bird flu, are still being examined.

Further laboratory reports are awaited.

Karnataka faces rising temperatures

Several districts in Karnataka have recorded high summer temperatures in recent days. Kalaburgi reportedly touched 41.3°C, among the highest in the state.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast a further rise of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures over the next five days.

Wildlife experts say access to water sources and shaded habitats will be crucial for birds and animals during the heatwave period.
