A 33-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly smothering her 55-year-old mother to death in Anupanahalli village of Tumakuru taluk, reportedly after being influenced by claims made by an online astrologer.

The deceased has been identified as Pushpavathi (55). The accused, Suchitra (33), who resides with her husband in the Srinagar area of Tumakuru city, allegedly committed the crime on Wednesday night.

Alleged influence of astrologer

According to police, Suchitra’s father had died around one-and-a-half years ago due to health issues. However, investigators said she had recently consulted an astrologer online who allegedly claimed that her mother had performed black magic that led to her father’s death.

During interrogation, Suchitra reportedly confessed to smothering her mother with a pillow while she was asleep.

A senior police officer stated that the act was carried out in the presence of her husband, who allegedly encouraged or guided her during the incident.

Funeral attempt raises suspicion

After the death, the accused allegedly tried to portray it as a natural death and hurried to conduct the funeral rites. However, villagers became suspicious about the circumstances and alerted authorities.

Police registered a case of murder at Kyathasandra Police Station.

Both Suchitra and her husband have been arrested, and further investigation is underway. Officials also indicated that a possible financial dispute angle is being examined as part of the probe.

The incident has shocked the local community, raising concerns over the influence of superstition and misinformation.
