Udupi: A total of 109 homestays and 21 resorts have been shut down in Udupi district after surprise inspections found them operating illegally, officials informed Upa Lokayukta Justice B Veerappa.
The inspections were conducted to check unauthorised tourism establishments and the discharge of effluents and sewage into the sea. The action followed a suo motu proceeding initiated by the Upa Lokayukta.
Officials ordered to strengthen checks
The matter was presented before Justice Veerappa through a joint statement by senior district officials, including the Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Director of Tourism, MESCOM Executive Engineer, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Executive Officer of Udupi Taluk Panchayat.
The Upa Lokayukta directed officials to comply with the Karnataka Government’s guidelines issued on April 29, 2026, and a circular dated April 27 concerning upgraded protocols for the operation, safety and security of homestays and Bed and Breakfast establishments.
Officials also informed the Upa Lokayukta that 227 homestays and 42 resorts had obtained licences from the competent authorities.
Sewage discharge raises environmental concern
Justice Veerappa expressed concern over improperly treated sewage from the Udupi City Municipal Council and untreated sewage entering the ocean.
He directed officials to constitute a committee headed by the Assistant Commissioner to inspect sewage treatment plants (STPs) across the district.
The Upa Lokayukta said improper sewage treatment was affecting aquatic life and contributing to groundwater and environmental pollution.
Nitturu plant under scrutiny
The Upa Lokayukta also expressed displeasure over the improper treatment of sewage water in Udupi town and the failure to dispose of waste at the sewage treatment plant at Nitturu.
The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) was reportedly found to be more than 10 points above the prescribed level.
Improperly treated water from the facility enters drains connected to the Indrani River. The river eventually joins the sea near Kalmadi Bridge and Baapu Thota in the Malpe area.
The further hearing in the matter has been adjourned to September 29.
