Udupi: In a decisive move to curb illegal sand transportation and overloading, police in Udupi district conducted a special operation on April 25, during which 13 lorries were seized for violating transport regulations.
The operation was carried out under the direction of the deputy commissioner and involved coordinated efforts by personnel from multiple police stations, traffic police, and officials from concerned departments.
Vehicles intercepted across key routes
As part of the drive, police teams kept strict vigil on major roads, check-posts, and key transport routes across the district. Vehicles suspected of carrying sand illegally or exceeding permitted limits were stopped and thoroughly inspected.
During the checks, authorities identified several violations, including overloading of sand beyond prescribed limits, absence of valid documents, and licence-related irregularities.
A total of 13 lorries were found to be in breach of the rules and were immediately seized.
Multiple violations detected
Officials stated that many of the intercepted vehicles were transporting sand in quantities exceeding the legal limit, posing risks to road safety and contributing to illegal mining activities.
In addition, several drivers failed to produce essential documents related to transportation permits, vehicle registration, and licences, further compounding the violations.
Authorities emphasised that such offences not only damage infrastructure but also disrupt regulated mining practices.
Vehicles handed over for legal action
Following the seizure, all 13 vehicles were handed over to the Department of Mines and Geology for further legal proceedings. Officials from the department are expected to initiate fines and take necessary action against the vehicle owners under relevant laws.
The department will also assess the extent of violations and determine penalties based on the severity of each case.
Warning issued to transporters
Police have issued strict instructions to vehicle owners and drivers, urging them to adhere to rules governing sand transportation. Officials highlighted the importance of complying with loading limits and carrying valid documentation at all times.
They warned that similar enforcement drives will continue in the coming days to ensure strict compliance and to deter illegal activities.
Coordinated enforcement effort
The operation saw active participation from various wings of the police department, including traffic units, along with support from regulatory authorities. Such coordinated action is aimed at strengthening enforcement and maintaining order in the district’s transport and mining sectors.
Conclusion
The seizure of 13 lorries underscores the administration’s firm stance against illegal sand transportation and overloading in Udupi. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to continuing such drives to safeguard resources, ensure road safety, and enforce the law effectively.
