Udupi: A joint enforcement drive conducted by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the traffic police has led to action against 23 buses for violating road safety guidelines in Udupi district. The inspection was carried out as part of efforts to ensure compliance with safety measures directed by the District Road Safety Committee.

Officials said the special drive focused on checking whether buses were adhering to the road safety guidelines issued during the recent District Road Safety Committee meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner.

Joint inspection across Udupi district

The enforcement drive was jointly carried out by officials of the Udupi Regional Transport Office and the traffic police.

The inspections targeted buses operating in different parts of the district to verify compliance with safety regulations and identify violations that could pose risks to passengers and other road users.

Authorities examined vehicles for adherence to prescribed road safety norms and initiated action against those found violating the rules.

Fifteen cases registered in Udupi city

During the operation conducted by the Udupi Traffic Police Station in Udupi city on Monday, officials registered 15 cases against buses that failed to comply with the prescribed safety guidelines.

The inspection formed part of the district-wide campaign aimed at improving road safety and ensuring public transport vehicles follow mandatory regulations.

Officials said the drive was conducted at key locations within the city where buses undergo routine checks.

Earlier drive in Kundapur

The latest operation follows a similar enforcement drive carried out by the Kundapur Traffic Police Station on July 27, during which eight cases were registered against buses for safety violations.

Together, the two inspection drives resulted in action against 23 buses across the district.

Authorities stated that the coordinated operations reflect the administration’s commitment to strengthening road safety and ensuring transport operators comply with regulatory requirements.

Rs 11,500 fine collected

During the enforcement drive, officials collected a total fine of Rs 11,500 from the violators.

The penalties were imposed under the applicable provisions for non-compliance with road safety regulations.

Officials said such inspections also serve as an awareness initiative by encouraging vehicle operators to follow safety norms and maintain required standards.

More inspections planned

Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said similar enforcement drives will continue across the district in the coming days.

He emphasised that regular inspections are essential to improve road discipline, enhance passenger safety and ensure that public transport vehicles comply with all mandatory safety requirements.

The district police and the RTO have appealed to bus operators to strictly adhere to road safety guidelines to avoid penalties and contribute to safer roads for commuters.
