Udupi: A black leopard was reportedly spotted behind a cattle shed at Doddmane in Belanje, within the limits of Kucchoor gram panchayat in Hebri taluk, triggering concern among residents.

The sighting of the wild animal close to residential premises has caused fear among people in and around Belanje, with locals expressing concern over their safety.

Leopard spotted near residential area

According to local residents, the black leopard was seen behind the cattle shed belonging to Ganesh Shetty at Doddmane.

The proximity of the animal to a residential property has raised concerns among villagers, particularly those living near forested areas and those who depend on cattle and other livestock.

Residents are now cautious about venturing out, especially during early morning and evening hours when wild animals may be active.

Forest department urged to act

Local leader Amrith Kumar Shetty has urged forest department officials to respond immediately to the reported sighting.

He has called for necessary measures to be taken to capture the leopard and ensure the safety of residents in the area.

Residents have also appealed to the forest department to intensify surveillance around Belanje and adjoining areas.

They have sought precautionary measures to prevent the leopard from approaching houses and cattle sheds and to minimise the possibility of any untoward incident.

Residents remain alert

The reported sighting has prompted residents to remain vigilant, particularly in areas close to cattle sheds and other properties located near forested stretches.

Locals have urged the authorities to monitor the movement of the animal and take appropriate action at the earliest.

Forest department officials are expected to assess the situation and take further measures based on the leopard’s movement and the circumstances surrounding the reported sighting.
