The Udupi Town Police have registered a case against the owner of a local electrical shop following allegations that pet dogs kept at his residence were posing a threat to public safety.

The case was registered after repeated complaints from residents regarding the behaviour of the animals near an electrical shop in Shivalli village.

Inspection follows public complaints

According to police, Sathish, a Health Inspector with the Udupi City Municipality, visited the location on May 27 following directions from the Municipal Commissioner.

The inspection was carried out after residents raised concerns that the dogs were frequently roaming in public areas and creating fear among people in the neighbourhood.

During the visit, two individuals reportedly objected to the inspection. The health inspector observed that three dogs were moving freely in the open yard without any restraints or protective barriers to prevent them from entering the nearby public road.

Residents cite safety concerns

Local residents informed municipal officials that the dogs often chased schoolchildren, elderly morning walkers, motorists, cyclists and two-wheeler riders passing through the area.

According to the complaint, the animals frequently ran onto the road, creating dangerous situations for road users and increasing the risk of accidents.

Residents expressed concern that the unchecked movement of the dogs could potentially lead to serious injuries or loss of life if corrective measures were not taken.

Action taken after owners fail to comply

Police said the health inspector had instructed the owners to either relocate the animals or ensure that adequate measures were taken to keep them secured within the property.

However, authorities alleged that no corrective action was taken despite the warning.

Following the inspection report and complaints received from residents, the Udupi Town Police registered a case against the owner under Sections 291 and 292 read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
