Udupi: A five-year-old girl found in a helpless condition at the government bus stand in Bannanje was rescued by authorities and later safely reunited with her mother following timely intervention by officials and social workers.
Rescue after public alert
The incident came to light after members of the public noticed the young child left unattended at the bus stand and alerted the patrolling Akka squad. Acting swiftly on the information, the team reached the spot and rescued the child, ensuring her immediate safety.
The girl was then taken to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) office at Doddanagudde for further care and inquiry into her situation.
Temporary rehabilitation and care
Following standard procedures, the child was later shifted to the Krishnanugraha Adoption Centre in Lakshmi Nagar, as directed by the Child Welfare Committee. Authorities ensured that the child received proper care and supervision during this period.
Officials initiated an inquiry to trace the child’s background and understand the circumstances that led to her being left at the bus stand.
Background of the family
During the investigation, it was revealed that the child’s mother is a native of Gadag. After the death of her husband, she had travelled to Udupi with her daughter in search of livelihood.
Although she managed to secure employment, she did not have a place to stay. As a result, both mother and child were forced to live at the bus stand for several days. While the mother went to work during the day, the child remained at the bus stand, leading to concerns among the public.
Reunification with mother
Authorities later confirmed that the employer of the woman had arranged accommodation for her. Following her request and verification of her situation, the Child Welfare Committee permitted the reunification of the child with her mother.
Both the mother and child are now safe and residing together, bringing a positive conclusion to the incident.
Team effort in rescue operation
The rescue operation was carried out with the support of multiple stakeholders. Social worker Nithyananda Olakadu played a key role in assisting the authorities.
Members of the Akka squad, including Rakshitha and Vanitha, along with staff from the emergency helpline centre and child protection unit personnel Prakash and Vidyashree, were actively involved in ensuring the child’s safety and rehabilitation.
Importance of public vigilance
Officials acknowledged the role of alert citizens in bringing the matter to attention. They emphasised that timely reporting of such incidents can help prevent potential risks to vulnerable individuals, especially children.
Conclusion
The swift response by authorities and coordinated efforts of social workers ensured the safety of the child and her eventual reunification with her mother. The incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and institutional support in safeguarding children in distress.
