Udupi: In a noteworthy example of civic responsibility and youth leadership, Master Deepen Deepak Shenoy, a Class VI student of Mukunda Kripa School, Udupi (a unit of the Academy of General Education, Manipal), has written directly to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka highlighting a life-threatening pothole posing a serious risk to public safety.
The hazardous pothole is located near a small bridge on the road connecting Diana Theatre to MGM Budnar Road, a stretch that witnesses heavy daily movement by school children, senior citizens, morning walkers, two-wheelers, cars, and public buses. With no barricades, reflectors, or warning signage in place, the deep and exposed pothole presents an immediate danger and raises the risk of serious accidents and potential loss of life.
Inspired by Scouts & Guides leadership training
Master Deepen, an active member of the Bharat Scouts & Guides, Udupi Wing, noticed the dangerous road condition while returning from school. Having recently participated in a District Leadership Training Camp, he felt a strong sense of responsibility to act, guided by the Scout motto “Be Prepared” and the organisation’s emphasis on duty to society.
Rather than ignoring the issue, the young student carefully documented the hazard by taking photographs and submitted a formal representation to the Chief Minister, urging swift action by the concerned authorities to prevent mishaps.
Acting without seeking publicity
What makes the initiative particularly commendable is that the student acted without seeking personal publicity or recognition. His effort was driven purely by concern for public safety and the well-being of fellow road users, especially vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
Local residents have welcomed the move, noting that the poor condition of the road had been a long-standing concern. Many expressed hope that the student’s letter would finally draw the attention of authorities to the urgency of repairs and safety measures at the spot.
A reminder of responsible citizenship
Master Deepen’s action has highlighted the powerful role that young citizens can play in community safety when guided by awareness, values, and leadership training. His initiative stands as a reminder that age is no barrier to responsible citizenship and that timely intervention, even by a child, can help prevent avoidable tragedies.
