Udupi: The Udupi District Congress Committee organised a large-scale protest on May 30 against what it described as anti-people policies of the Central Government. The demonstration witnessed the participation of a large number of Congress leaders, party workers and supporters from different parts of the district.
The protest march commenced from the District Congress office in Udupi and proceeded through key areas of the city before culminating at Jodukatte. Participants raised slogans against the Central Government and voiced concerns over various issues that they claimed were affecting the public.
Congress leaders alleged administrative failures on the part of the Centre and called for greater accountability on matters they said had a direct impact on citizens and democratic institutions.
Protest march draws large participation
The rally attracted significant participation from party functionaries and grassroots workers, who carried placards and banners highlighting their demands. Throughout the march, protesters expressed their opposition to several policies of the Central Government and urged authorities to address public concerns.
Party leaders stated that the demonstration was organised to draw attention to issues they believe require urgent intervention and transparent action from the government.
The march moved peacefully through the city under police supervision, with security personnel deployed to monitor the situation and ensure public order.
SIR process and NEET issues raised
Among the major issues highlighted during the protest were alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and the alleged NEET examination scam.
Congress leaders accused the Central Government of failing to ensure transparency and accountability in matters related to public administration and examinations. They claimed that such developments had raised concerns about the functioning of democratic institutions and the future of students.
Speakers at the protest criticised what they described as misuse of power and called for corrective measures to safeguard public trust in governance and educational systems.
The party also urged authorities to conduct transparent investigations into the concerns raised and take appropriate action wherever necessary.
Police detain protesters
As the protest reached Jodukatte, demonstrators attempted to intensify their agitation. Police personnel intervened to prevent any disruption to public order and subsequently detained several Congress leaders and workers.
Authorities stated that the detentions were carried out as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the area. The detained protesters were taken into custody and later processed in accordance with established procedures.
Police maintained a strong presence throughout the demonstration to ensure the event remained peaceful and to prevent any untoward incidents.
Political message ahead of future campaigns
The protest forms part of the Congress party’s broader efforts to mobilise public opinion on issues it considers significant at the national level. Party leaders said they would continue raising concerns regarding governance, public welfare and democratic accountability through peaceful democratic means.
The demonstration concluded after the police intervention, but Congress leaders reiterated their commitment to continuing public campaigns on the issues highlighted during the protest.
