Udupi: The District Congress Committee organised a large-scale protest on May 30 against what it described as anti-people policies of the Central government. The demonstration witnessed the participation of a large number of Congress leaders, party workers and supporters from different parts of the district, who gathered to voice their concerns over several national issues.
The protest march began at the District Congress Office and moved through key streets of the city before concluding at Jodukatte. Throughout the rally, participants raised slogans criticising the Central government and demanding greater accountability on issues they claimed were adversely affecting the public.
Protest highlights governance concerns
Congress leaders used the occasion to express dissatisfaction with various policies and decisions of the Union government. They alleged that governance failures and policy decisions had created difficulties for common citizens and called for corrective measures.
Party workers carried placards and banners while raising slogans against the Centre. The demonstration drew significant public attention as the procession passed through major areas of the city.
According to organisers, the protest was intended to highlight issues that they believe require urgent attention from the government and to create awareness among the public.
Allegations over SIR process and NEET examination
One of the key issues raised during the protest was the alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Congress leaders accused the Centre of compromising democratic processes and weakening institutional transparency.
The protestors also highlighted concerns regarding the alleged NEET examination scam. Party leaders claimed that students and their families had been affected by irregularities and demanded a transparent and accountable system for conducting competitive examinations.
Speakers at the event alleged that a lack of proper oversight had undermined public confidence and called for comprehensive action to address the concerns raised by students and educational stakeholders.
Police intervene at Jodukatte
As the protest reached Jodukatte, demonstrators attempted to intensify their agitation. Police personnel deployed at the venue intervened to prevent any disruption to public order.
Authorities detained several Congress workers and leaders as a precautionary measure. The action was taken to maintain law and order and ensure that the protest remained peaceful.
The detained protesters were later taken into custody as part of preventive measures adopted by the police during the demonstration.
Congress vows to continue agitation
Congress leaders stated that the protest was part of a broader campaign to raise awareness about issues they believe are affecting citizens across the country. They reiterated their demand for accountability and transparency in governance and said the party would continue to raise public concerns through democratic means.
The demonstration concluded after police intervention, but party leaders indicated that similar protests and awareness campaigns may be organised in the future to highlight issues concerning governance, democratic institutions and the welfare of students.
The event witnessed substantial participation from party cadres and marked one of the significant political demonstrations held in the district in recent weeks.
