Udupi: Braving physical challenges and social barriers, a differently-abled food delivery worker is setting an inspiring example of determination and dignity through his daily work in Udupi.

Vijay Kumar, originally from Vijayapura district, has been living in Udupi for the past year with his wife and two children. For more than 20 months, he has been working as a delivery partner with Zomato, striving to earn a steady livelihood for his family.

Shift from Bengaluru to Udupi

Before relocating, Vijay Kumar worked in Bengaluru. However, the city’s heavy traffic posed significant challenges for him, prompting his move to Udupi.

“Due to traffic problems in Bengaluru, I moved to Udupi and continued the same job,” he said, adding that the comparatively calmer roads have helped him manage his work more efficiently.

Long hours and disciplined routine

Vijay follows a structured and demanding routine, working in two shifts daily—from 12 pm to 3 pm and again from 6 pm to 10 pm. He covers key areas including Udupi, Manipal, and Katapady.

On average, he completes around 15 deliveries a day. His earnings typically range between ₹400 to ₹500 in the afternoon and ₹200 to ₹300 in the evening, bringing his daily income to approximately ₹800.

Despite his physical condition, he ensures timely deliveries and adapts based on circumstances. “If there is a lift in apartments, I go up and deliver. Otherwise, I request customers to come downstairs,” he explained.

Challenges on the road

Vijay’s journey is marked by both hardship and resilience. Recalling a recent incident, he said his vehicle battery drained while he was in Manipal because he had forgotten to carry a spare.

“When I asked auto drivers to drop me to Udyavar, they demanded ₹400. At that moment, a stranger came forward and helped push my vehicle until I reached Udupi safely,” he said, highlighting both the difficulties he faces and the kindness he occasionally encounters.

Mixed reactions from society

Vijay Kumar said societal responses to his work have been mixed. “Some people look down on me, while others appreciate me. Many shout at me when I ride on the road, but I ignore it and focus on my work,” he said.

However, moments of encouragement keep him motivated. He recalled receiving a ₹500 tip from a customer who appreciated his effort to deliver food to the doorstep using a lift instead of asking them to come down.

Support from peers and community

Support from fellow delivery workers and hotel staff has played a crucial role in helping him navigate daily challenges. “In some hotels, staff bring the orders to me, while in others I collect them myself. Fellow delivery workers support me a lot,” he said.

Such gestures of cooperation and empathy have made a significant difference in his work life.

Work as a source of dignity

For Vijay Kumar, work is more than just a means of income—it is a source of purpose and self-respect. “I enjoy working. Sitting idle at home makes me feel restless. I can support my family only if I work,” he said.

Conclusion

Vijay Kumar’s journey stands as a testament to perseverance, resilience, and dignity in labour. Despite physical limitations and societal challenges, his determination to provide for his family continues to inspire those around him, reminding the community of the strength of human spirit.
