Udupi: Tempers flared at the Udupi Municipal Council general meeting today over the controversial digging of a divider near Bannanje on National Highway 169(A), triggering heated exchanges, demands for apology, and a dramatic opposition walkout.

Council member T.G. Hegde raised concerns about alleged corruption in the widening of a U-turn at the Bannanje junction, stating that the incident has gone viral on social media, casting doubts on the role of the Municipal Council and elected representatives. He questioned whether proper permissions were taken before the divider was dug up and demanded clarity.

Savita Harish Ram, another council member, pointed fingers at nominated member Suresh Shetty Bannanje, accusing him of insinuating corruption by the Council and demanding an immediate apology.

Responding to the charges, Suresh Shetty denied making any defamatory remarks: “I have not accused anyone of taking bribes. Why should I apologize?” he said, which further enraged the ruling party.

A verbal spat broke out, with ruling party members storming the well of the House, demanding a direct apology from Suresh Shetty. Though Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Kanchan offered an apology on behalf of the nominated member, the ruling side was unsatisfied.

Amid mounting tensions, the opposition staged a walkout, forcing the meeting into disorder. Senior member Sumitra Nayak was later sent to negotiate with the opposition and restore order in the council session.
