Preliminary estimates of the damage caused by recent heavy rains in Dakshina Kannada place the total losses at ₹192.81 crore. This includes significant damage to roads, bridges, and culverts, with the Public Works Department estimating losses at ₹103.48 crore, the Panchayat Raj Department at ₹54.12 crore, and urban local bodies at ₹35.2 crore. Additionally, Mescom reported a loss of ₹10.12 crore.
District in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, who visited flood-affected areas, noted that 129 houses were severely damaged and 374 partially damaged since the monsoon began in June. Under the revised compensation guidelines, severely damaged houses will receive ₹1.2 lakh, with grants available under the Devaraj Urs housing scheme for rebuilding. Partially damaged houses will be compensated with ₹50,000, while those residing on illegal land will receive ₹1 lakh.
The district disaster relief fund has ₹14.22 crore, and the taluk disaster relief fund has ₹4.14 crore, according to the Minister.
During his visit to Adyapady near Mangaluru airport, residents requested a permanent solution for flooding issues exacerbated by the Maravoor vented dam. Minister Rao instructed Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan to deploy an expert team to address this issue.
Residents at Kadavinabagilu in Bantwal taluk also reported flooding due to a blocked drain. Rao directed the Panchayat Development Officer to convene a meeting to resolve this issue. Public Works Department officials were tasked with urging NHAI to repair the damaged Kanchigarpet-Panemangluru road and to place barricades and sandbags to mitigate further damage and prevent accidents.
