Kundapur: Dr Mahendra Kumar Shetty, a doctor at Kundapur Taluk Government Hospital, has been suspended from government service following an alleged assault on journalist Srikanth Hemmadi.
The alleged assault reportedly followed a news report concerning irregularities at Kundapur Taluk Government Hospital. The incident took place at a restaurant in Kundapur on the morning of August 21.
Journalist allegedly assaulted over hospital report
According to reports, Srikanth Hemmadi, Kundapur correspondent of a news publication, was allegedly assaulted by Dr Shetty during the incident. CCTV footage from the restaurant reportedly captured the incident.
Following the alleged assault, Hemmadi sustained injuries and was admitted to Kundapur Taluk Hospital for treatment.
The incident has drawn concern among journalists in the district, particularly over the safety of media personnel while carrying out their professional responsibilities.
Journalists’ association condemns incident
The Udupi District Working Journalists’ Association strongly condemned the alleged assault and urged the police to take stringent action against the accused.
The association also appealed to the authorities to ensure the safety and security of journalists while they perform their professional duties.
An FIR has been registered at the Kundapur police station in connection with the incident.
Doctor suspended from government service
Dr Mahendra Kumar Shetty, who was serving as a medical officer at Kundapur Government Hospital, has subsequently been suspended from government service following the incident. A local report also confirmed the suspension of the doctor.
The police investigation into the alleged assault is underway.
