An edible oil tanker overturned in Santhekatte after the driver lost control while navigating an under-construction underpass area. The incident came to light on Saturday, June 8, in the morning.
The mishap is suspected to have occurred when the tanker driver mistakenly drove onto a closed service road leading from Udupi to Kundapur. The road conditions, already challenging due to ongoing construction, were further worsened by sludge, making the surface extremely slippery.
As the driver attempted to maneuver through the tricky path, the vehicle lost traction and ultimately toppled over into the under-construction underpass site. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, but the accident has raised concerns about the safety measures and signage in place at construction zones.
Emergency services were quick to respond, ensuring that the oil spill was contained to prevent environmental damage. The authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause and to implement necessary safety measures to avoid such mishaps in the future.
Local residents have expressed their concerns about the hazardous conditions of the service roads and the need for better guidance and warnings for drivers, especially in areas undergoing construction.
