Udupi: An elderly couple was rescued from a well near the Government Pre-University College in Kemmannu on Wednesday morning after they accidentally fell into it. Prompt action by local volunteers and Fire and Emergency Services personnel helped save the couple, who were later shifted to a hospital for treatment.
The rescued individuals have been identified as Gopalakrishna (65) and his wife Shyamala (60), residents of Kemmannu.
Woman accidentally falls into well
According to reports, the incident occurred at a well located near the couple’s residence.
Shyamala reportedly slipped and fell into the well under circumstances that are yet to be fully established. On noticing the incident, her husband Gopalakrishna immediately attempted to rescue her.
In an effort to save his wife, he jumped into the well. However, both of them became trapped inside and were unable to come out on their own.
Rescue teams rush to the spot
Local residents quickly alerted emergency services after learning about the incident.
Noted rescuer Eshwar Malpe, along with personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services Department, rushed to the location and launched a rescue operation.
Using ropes and specialised rescue techniques, the team successfully brought both Gopalakrishna and Shyamala out of the well. The operation was completed with the assistance of local volunteers who gathered at the scene.
Couple shifted to hospital
After being rescued, the couple was found to be in a critical condition and was immediately provided assistance.
They were subsequently shifted to a hospital in Manipal for further treatment and medical observation.
Hospital authorities are monitoring their condition, while family members and local residents have expressed relief over the successful rescue.
Police inspect the scene
Following the incident, Malpe police visited the location and conducted an inspection.
Officials gathered preliminary information regarding the circumstances that led to the accident. Further inquiries are expected to determine the exact sequence of events.
