Udupi: Udupi witnessed a grand celebration on Sunday evening as Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar attended the 64th birth star festival of Paryaya Sri Sugunendra Tirtha at the royal palace of Sri Krishna Math. The event, organised by Paryaya Sriputtige Math, also marked the release of a commemorative postage stamp honouring Jagadguru Sri Madhvacharya, credited with installing Sri Krishna at Udupi.
“Faith builds confidence, not spectacle”
Addressing the gathering, Shivakumar underlined the deeper essence of religious practice.
“Religion, worship and devotion are not things for display. They are meant to build self-confidence and uphold values. We must carry forward customs and beliefs collectively while protecting and preserving our faith,” he said.
Shivakumar shared a personal reflection, noting that critics often find fault with his words, for which he seeks divine guidance:
“I pray to Lord Krishna that no mistake escapes my lips. I consider it my fortune to have the divine darshan of Lord Krishna and to release the stamp of Madhvacharya in his presence.”
Symbolism and spiritual connection
In a mystical tone, the DCM remarked:
“Some call me a rock. Rock is nature; when carved, it becomes form; when worshipped, it becomes culture. You can make steps, pillars, gravel or idols from rocks. Similarly, you can use me in any way you want.”
He recalled previous visits to the Math and spoke of the profound experience of receiving universal darshan of Krishna. He also quoted from the Bhagavad Gita, reflecting his reverence for spiritual teachings.
