Udupi: An FIR has been registered against Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna for allegedly making provocative and inflammatory remarks during a protest organised by the Udupi district BJP in the city on Tuesday, July 28.
The case was registered at the Udupi Town Police Station based on a complaint lodged by Udupi District Congress president Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, who alleged that the BJP legislator made hate-filled and defamatory statements against Congress leaders and protesters.
Congress president files complaint
According to the complaint, Yashpal Suvarna allegedly referred to CJP protesters and Congress leaders as “terrorists” during his speech. The complainant also alleged that the MLA described Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as a “drug addict.”
The Congress has termed these remarks inflammatory and claimed they were intended to incite hatred and disturb communal harmony.
Ashok Kumar Kodavoor urged the police to initiate legal action, stating that the statements amounted to hate speech and violated provisions of the law.
FIR registered under BNS provisions
Acting on the complaint, the Udupi Town Police registered FIR No. 103/2026 against the MLA.
The case has been booked under Sections 57, 192, 196(2), 352, 353(2), and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police said the FIR has been registered following a preliminary examination of the complaint and that the matter will now be investigated in accordance with legal procedures.
Investigation to proceed
Police officials stated that further legal proceedings will be initiated as part of the investigation.
The authorities have not disclosed whether notices have been issued to the accused or when his statement will be recorded.
Meanwhile, no official response from MLA Yashpal Suvarna regarding the allegations or the registration of the FIR was immediately available.
The investigation is expected to examine the contents of the speech, available video recordings, witness statements and other evidence before any further action is taken.
