Udupi: The ‘Manju Matha’, a Malpe-registered gillnet fishing boat that had earlier met with an accident after taking in water at sea, drifted ashore at Ucchila beach in Ermalu Bada village under the Hejamady Coastal Security Police (CSP) Station limits on Friday evening. The six fishermen on board had already been rescued by the Indian Coast Guard, while authorities have recommended action against the boat owner for allegedly violating the district’s fishing ban.

Boat developed leak at sea

The fishing boat had departed from Malpe Fishing Harbour for the Arabian Sea on the morning of June 29.

According to officials, water began entering the vessel through its bottom during the afternoon. As the situation worsened and the crew was unable to control the leak, assistance was sought from the Indian Coast Guard.

Coast Guard personnel promptly reached the location and safely rescued all six fishermen on board. However, the damaged vessel could not be salvaged and was left adrift after the rescue operation was completed.

Fishermen verified by authorities

Following the rescue, the fishermen were brought to the New Mangalore Port Authority, where officials from the Coastal Security Police Station, the Fisheries Department, the Immigration Department and the local police verified their identities and documents.

Authorities confirmed that four of the rescued fishermen were natives of Tamil Nadu, while two were from Kerala.

Action recommended over fishing ban violation

Officials said the fishing boat was allegedly engaged in fishing in violation of the fishing ban imposed by the district administration.

A report has been submitted to the Fisheries Department, recommending appropriate legal action against the owner of the vessel. Authorities have also recommended the cancellation of the boat’s licence and registration for the alleged violation.

Boat reaches Ucchila beach

At around 6.15 pm on Friday, the drifting vessel reached Ucchila beach in Ermalu Bada village.

After receiving information, personnel from the Hejamady Coastal Security Police Station, including Head Constable Abdul Razak, CPC Praveen, KND Rajesh and Theertha, rushed to the spot.

With the assistance of local fishermen and members of the public, the officials safely pulled the damaged boat ashore.

Further action expected

Authorities are expected to initiate further proceedings based on the report submitted to the Fisheries Department regarding the alleged violation of the fishing ban.

The incident highlights the risks associated with venturing into the sea during restricted periods and the importance of adhering to fishing regulations for the safety of fishermen and marine conservation.
