In response to concerns over elephant encounters in Someshwar Sanctuary, Nadalu village, Hebri taluk, the forest department has launched a dedicated jeep transportation system for 15 students. Gaurav S M, the range forest officer of Hebri, initiated this service to ensure safe passage for students commuting from Megadde, Vanajaru, Kudlu, Kedbhumakki, and Belar to Nellikatte bus stop.
Under the guidance of senior officials including Karikalan, CCF; Shivaram Babu, DCF; Prakash Poojary, ACF; and Junaid Abda, DRFO, the jeep operates 8 trips daily, facilitating students’ commute during early morning hours.
Residents had voiced fears and pressure on the forest department regarding elephant presence, prompting proactive measures like this jeep service. Gaurav M S affirmed the department’s commitment to community safety, stating, “Our department stands firmly with the community. Senior officials promptly responded to ensure safe travel to school. There is no need for anyone to fear.”
Students like Anvitha, a class 5 student, expressed relief, noting, “With the jeep facility, we are no longer afraid of elephants. Previously, our parents faced challenges during the monsoon when taking us to school.”
Local residents echoed gratitude, acknowledging the persistent elephant threats to agriculture and personal safety. They praised the forest department’s initiative, emphasizing how it has restored confidence in daily commutes.
