Udupi: Manipal police have arrested four engineering students for allegedly assaulting three youths in Eshwarnagar of Herga village under the Manipal police station limits. The accused were produced before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
Police said the incident occurred late on the night of August 2, and further investigation is underway.
Three youths allegedly attacked
According to the police, the incident took place at around 11.50 pm when Yashraj, his younger brother Pavan Kumar, and their friend Shreyas were walking along a road in Eshwarnagar.
The four accused allegedly arrived in two cars and intercepted the trio before attacking them.
Police said the victims were allegedly abused, assaulted and threatened before the accused fled the scene.
Four students arrested
The arrested accused have been identified as:
- Akshay A (21), a resident of Kallapanakere, Shivamogga
- Puneeth S (21), a resident of Halkola village, Shivamogga
- Shamanth K. R. (21), a resident of Manjunath Badavane, Purle, Shivamogga
- Yashwanth B. J. (21), a resident of Vinobanagar, Shivamogga
Police said the accused allegedly arrived in a Swift Dzire (KA-14-P-4245) and a Ford car (KA-14-MB-4109) before carrying out the assault.
Victim suffers grievous injury
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly abused Pavan Kumar without provocation before assaulting him with their hands and kicking him.
One of the accused is alleged to have struck Pavan Kumar on the face using a metal punch, causing a grievous injury to his nose.
Police further alleged that Yashraj and Shreyas were also assaulted, kicked and had their clothes torn during the attack.
The accused are also alleged to have threatened to kill the three victims before fleeing from the spot.
Case registered, accused remanded
Based on the complaint, Manipal police registered a case and launched an investigation.
The four accused were subsequently arrested and produced before the jurisdictional court.
The court remanded all four accused to judicial custody.
Investigation continues
During the investigation, police found that all four accused are engineering students studying at a private educational institution.
The investigation is being carried out by Manipal Police Sub-Inspector B. N. Thimmesh, who is examining the circumstances that led to the alleged assault.
Police said further investigation is in progress.
