Udupi: Kota Police have registered a theft case after gold jewellery worth around Rs 30 lakh allegedly went missing from a house in Molahalli village of Kundapur taluk. The complainant has accused a family acquaintance of stealing the ornaments by taking advantage of the times when the house was unoccupied.

Jewellery found missing from cupboard

According to the complaint filed by Bharati (45), a resident of Kailkeri Mavinkatte in Molahalli village, she had kept her gold ornaments in a cupboard after returning from a wedding function on June 1.

When she later opened the cupboard to retrieve the jewellery, she discovered that all the ornaments were missing. A thorough search of the house failed to trace the valuables, prompting her to approach the police.

Jewellery worth around Rs 30 lakh

The missing ornaments are estimated to weigh around 320 grams and are valued at approximately Rs 30 lakh.

According to the complaint, the stolen jewellery includes:

  • Seven gold bangles
  • Seven gold rings
  • Seven pairs of earrings
  • One pair of jhumkas
  • Three gold bracelets
  • One black-bead (karimani) chain
  • One gold necklace
  • One pearl chain
  • One red-stone necklace
  • Two gold chains

The complainant stated that all the ornaments had been stored safely inside the cupboard before they allegedly went missing.

Family acquaintance named in complaint

In her complaint, Bharati alleged that Chetan Shetty, a friend of her husband who frequently visited their residence and was familiar with the family, stole the jewellery.

She claimed that he allegedly took advantage of occasions when no one was present at the house to commit the theft.

The allegation forms part of the complaint filed before the Kota Police. The police investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft.

Police register case

Based on the complaint, the Kota Police have registered a case under Sections 331(3), 331(4), and 305(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police have initiated an investigation to verify the allegations, recover the missing jewellery and identify those responsible. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
