Udupi: A momentous spiritual project was launched on Sunday as Sri Subudhendra Tirtha Swamiji of Raghavendra Mutt, Mantralaya, ceremonially initiated the construction of the Parthasarathy Suvarna Ratha (Golden Chariot) at Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt.
The event took place at the invitation of Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Puthige Mutt, the current Paryaya Peetadhipathi. The golden chariot, estimated at ₹18 crore, is envisioned as a tribute to the Bhagavad Gita and forms part of the ongoing Koti Geetha Lekhana Yajna, a movement encouraging devotees to handwrite the Gita one crore times.
Udupi Mutt currently possesses seven chariots, including ones crafted in wood, silver, gold, and Navaratna. The new golden chariot, however, will remain within the temple premises and facilitate year-round Rathotsavas.
The event began with Maha Pooja, during which Sri Krishna was adorned as Sri Moolarama, followed by a grand procession to Rajangana Hall, where a traditional Vishwakarma Pooja was performed. Using a symbolic uli (chisel), Sri Subudhendra Tirtha made the first ceremonial mark on the wooden base, formally launching the chariot’s creation.
He later announced a ₹10 lakh donation towards the chariot and reflected on the historic bond between Udupi and Mantralaya, citing Sri Raghavendra Swamiji’s spiritual legacy.
Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji called the chariot a “manoratha” (sacred wish) and expressed faith in Krishna’s grace to overcome material challenges. He highlighted Krishna’s childlike joy in such divine offerings and presented a golden necklace to the deity on this occasion.
