Udupi: The Special Executive Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police, Udupi district, have issued an externment order against a habitual matka gambling accused, directing him to reside outside the district in the interest of maintaining public peace and law and order.
The accused has been identified as Ramraj, also known as Ramesh Aras (48), who was residing in a rented house owned by Gulabi Shetty near Nagabana at Mathadabettu in Shivalli village of Udupi taluk.
The externment order was issued on July 18 after authorities reviewed his criminal record and repeated involvement in gambling-related offences.
Multiple gambling cases registered
According to police, Ramraj has been involved in several cases relating to illegal matka gambling.
A total of five cases have been registered against him at the Udupi Town Police Station. Police said he has already been convicted in four cases, while the remaining case is currently pending before the competent court.
Authorities stated that his repeated involvement in illegal gambling activities prompted the administration to initiate preventive action under the relevant legal provisions.
Externment order issued
After considering the nature of the offences and their impact on public order, the Special Executive Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police issued an externment order against the accused.
Officials said the action was taken as a preventive measure to safeguard public peace and maintain law and order in the district.
The order directs Ramraj to stay outside the limits of Udupi district for the period specified under the externment proceedings.
Shifted to Chikkamagaluru jurisdiction
As per the externment order, Ramraj has been directed to reside within the jurisdiction of the Chikkamagaluru Town Police Station in Chikkamagaluru district.
Police stated that the order has been issued under the applicable legal provisions governing externment of habitual offenders whose activities are considered detrimental to public order.
Authorities added that strict action would be initiated if the accused violates the conditions of the externment order or attempts to re-enter Udupi district without permission.
Preventive policing measure
Police said externment is one of the preventive measures available under law to curb the activities of habitual offenders and ensure peace in areas where repeated offences affect public order.
Officials maintained that such action is taken only after examining the criminal background of the individual and assessing whether continued presence in the district is likely to disturb law and order.
The Udupi Police reiterated their commitment to taking firm action against habitual offenders involved in illegal gambling and other unlawful activities to ensure the safety and security of the public.
