Udupi: Growing awareness about cardiac health is driving a sharp rise in ECG (Electrocardiogram) screenings across Udupi district, particularly in rural regions. From January to June this year, 5,196 individuals underwent ECG tests in government-run hospitals at the district and taluk levels.

Health officials noted a noticeable uptick in ECGs in June when compared to May, with more people voluntarily seeking heart check-ups. This proactive health trend is evident not just in public healthcare centres but also in private clinics. Individuals suffering from acidity, hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol issues, or even stress are increasingly opting for early screenings.

Rural Engagement Grows

Surprisingly, rural participation has surpassed urban areas in ECG testing. In June alone, 359 tests were done at Udupi District Hospital, 344 at Karkala Government Hospital, and 268 in Kundapur. Once reluctant due to poor access and long travel, rural residents are now more open to testing, thanks to intensive outreach by health workers conducting door-to-door campaigns.

Alarming Heart-Related Deaths

From January to June, 71 people reportedly died from heart complications. According to Dr Ashok, the district surgeon, 16 deaths occurred at the district hospital alone. Many of these individuals were over 50 years old, and some had alcohol-related health issues. Additional fatalities were reported in Brahmavar (8), Kota (5), Shirva (4), Kundapur (12), Karkala (6), Nitte (12), and Hebri (8).

Lifestyle Changes Urged

Doctors are recommending exercise, yoga, and dietary improvements. Dr Basavaraj Hubballi, District Health Officer, warned that sedentary habits and poor diets are major contributors. Patients presenting even mild symptoms are encouraged to get ECGs to detect issues early.
