Udupi: In view of the threat of landslides triggered by heavy rainfall and the continuous movement of heavy vehicles, Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K. has prohibited the movement of heavy vehicles through the Agumbe Ghat stretch on National Highway 169A until September 30.
The order has been issued as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety during the monsoon season, when the ghat section is particularly vulnerable to landslides and road damage.
Only light vehicles allowed
According to the official order, only light motor vehicles will be permitted to use the Agumbe Ghat section on National Highway 169A during the restriction period.
The Deputy Commissioner’s office stated that the decision was taken after assessing the risks posed by heavy and continuous rainfall in the region and the possibility of landslides along vulnerable stretches of the highway.
Agumbe Ghat, known for its steep terrain and heavy monsoon showers, often witnesses road disruptions during the rainy season due to falling debris, soil erosion and landslides.
Alternative routes announced
The district administration has issued alternative routes for heavy vehicles travelling towards Udupi.
Heavy vehicles travelling from Thirthahalli towards Udupi have been directed to take the Thirthahalli–Kundapur–Udupi route.
Similarly, vehicles proceeding from Chikkamagaluru to Udupi must travel via Balehonnur–Magundi–Kalasa–Kudremukh–S.K. Border.
Heavy vehicles coming from Narasimharajapura towards Udupi have been instructed to use the Koppa–Jayapura–Balehole–Kalasa–Kudremukh–S.K. Border route.
Officials have urged transport operators and drivers to strictly follow the revised traffic arrangements and cooperate with the authorities.
Precautionary measure during monsoon
The administration said the restrictions have been imposed to minimise risks to motorists and prevent accidents caused by landslides and road blockages during the monsoon season.
The Agumbe Ghat stretch is one of the most rainfall-prone regions in Karnataka and frequently experiences disruptions during heavy rains. Authorities closely monitor the condition of the road every year and issue precautionary directives whenever necessary.
District officials said the temporary ban on heavy vehicles is aimed at ensuring smooth traffic management and safeguarding the lives of commuters using the ghat road.
The restrictions will remain in force until September 30, after which the situation will be reviewed based on weather conditions and road safety assessments.
