Mysuru: The cardiac care infrastructure in Mysuru is set for a major boost, with plans underway to expand the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences following an announcement by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
A team of experts recently visited the Cardiac Care Facility at the hospital to assess requirements and plan the expansion, which aims to ease overcrowding and enhance treatment capacity. The project involves upgrading the existing 400-bed hospital to a 600-bed facility at an estimated cost of ₹180 crore.
Rising patient load prompts expansion
The hospital, located on KRS Road, currently handles a heavy influx of patients, with nearly 900 outpatients visiting daily. Patients from neighbouring districts such as Kodagu, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and Hassan depend on the facility for advanced yet affordable cardiac care.
The growing demand has placed considerable pressure on existing infrastructure. It is common for patients to queue up as early as 5 am for registration, highlighting the urgent need for expansion.
Before the Mysuru unit was established, patients had to travel to Bengaluru for treatment at the parent institute. Since its launch in 2014, the Mysuru centre has become a critical healthcare hub for the region.
New building to ease overcrowding
The proposed expansion includes the construction of a new building that will house additional facilities and departments. Authorities plan to shift several specialised services to the new block to streamline operations and reduce congestion in the main building.
According to hospital officials, departments such as Cardiac Surgery, Paediatric Care, Electrophysiology, and Vascular Treatment will be relocated to dedicated outpatient departments (OPDs) in the new structure. The existing building will primarily focus on cardiology services.
This reorganisation is expected to significantly improve patient flow and reduce waiting times.
Additional facilities and infrastructure
As part of the upgrade, the hospital will add 200 beds, increasing the total capacity to 600. The expansion will also include:
- Two additional operation theatres (OTs), taking the total to six
- Two new catheterisation laboratories (cath labs), adding to the existing four
- Two Intensive Cardiac Care Units (ICCUs)
- Separate male and female wards with 50 beds each
- Additional special wards for critical care
These enhancements are expected to enable the hospital to treat an additional 200 to 300 patients, significantly improving access to cardiac care in the region.
Timeline and future plans
Officials indicated that the project is currently in the planning stage and awaiting final approvals, including Cabinet clearance and fund allocation. Once the government order is issued, construction work is expected to begin within the next two to three months.
The authorities aim to complete the project within 24 months.
Dr B Dinesh, Director of the institute, confirmed that the proposal for expansion has been submitted and that further plans are also being considered to establish similar facilities in Central and Coastal Karnataka.
Inspection and review
During the recent visit, senior officials, including Dr B Dinesh and Medical Superintendent Dr K S Sadanand, inspected key areas of the hospital such as wards, emergency units, canteen, and parking facilities.
They reviewed the current infrastructure and discussed strategies to optimise space utilisation and improve patient services.
Conclusion
The expansion of the Jayadeva Hospital in Mysuru marks a significant step towards strengthening public healthcare infrastructure in Karnataka. With rising cases of cardiac ailments and increasing patient load, the upgraded facility is expected to play a crucial role in providing timely and affordable treatment.
Once completed, it will become the second-largest Jayadeva facility in the state after Bengaluru, offering enhanced services to thousands of patients across southern Karnataka.
