Manipal: Nandalike Pandu, a 23-year-old buffalo who earned legendary status in the Kambala arena, died in the early hours of Monday, September 28, due to age-related health problems.
Pandu had a large fan following and was known for his distinctive running style and remarkable speed. During his Kambala career, he secured several major victories in the rope category and became one of the most recognised buffaloes on the coastal Kambala circuit.
From junior category to Kambala stardom
Pandu began his Kambala journey at the house of Karkala Jeevandas Adyanthaya, where he initially competed in the junior rope category. A year later, Atthur Manmath Shetty brought him from Adyanthaya, marking the beginning of his medal-winning career.
Pandu went on to win the series-best award in the junior rope category for two consecutive years, establishing himself as a promising competitor at an early stage.
He is believed to have entered the senior category around 2009. As Atthur Manmath Shetty was competing in the junior category at the time, Pandu was taken by Karinje Vinu Vishwanath Shetty the following year.
Pandu subsequently established himself as a prominent name in Kambala before moving to the stable of Nandalike Srikanth Bhat. By then, he had already earned a reputation among Kambala enthusiasts as a legendary racing buffalo.
Racing alongside Kambala legends
Pandu became particularly popular after racing alongside Kambala legends such as Chenna and Mode. His partnership with former renowned Kambala runner Nakre Jayakar Madivala also produced several memorable victories and medals.
Kambala fans fondly remember the way Pandu responded to Madivala’s voice during races. His acceleration and distinctive running style made his performances a major attraction for spectators.
Those who watched him compete often recalled how difficult it was to catch Pandu once he surged forward on the track.
A champion despite physical challenges
Pandu’s achievements were particularly notable because he did not possess all the physical characteristics typically associated with a racing buffalo.
From birth, the hoof of his front right leg was reportedly turned nearly 70 degrees. He also suffered from elbow dislocation and problems involving the ankle joint.
Despite these physical challenges, Pandu’s speed remained undiminished. His ability to accelerate rapidly on the Kambala track helped him overcome his physical limitations and earn a special place in the hearts of fans.
His performances became part of the memories of Kambala enthusiasts, who continued to follow his career even after he stopped competing.
Final years at Nandalike stable
Around three years ago, Pandu won his last medal at the Hokkadigoli Kambala. He subsequently retired from competitive racing and spent his final years at the stable of Nandalike Srikanth Bhat.
Pandu died on Monday morning due to age-related health problems, bringing to an end the journey of a buffalo whose career spanned years of competition and numerous memorable races.
For Kambala followers, Pandu will be remembered for his speed, fighting spirit and distinctive presence on the track, as well as the many victories and partnerships that made him one of the celebrated names of the sport.
